February is American Heart Month

American Heart Month, an annual celebration in February that began in 1964, urges Americans to join the battle against heart disease. A presidential proclamation each year pays tribute to researchers, physicians, public health education professionals and volunteers for their tireless efforts in preventing, treating, and researching heart disease.

Across the nation, millions of people will wear red attire on Friday, Feb. 2 – National Wear Red Day. Women and men throughout the country will be wearing red to show their support of the American Heart Association’s mission to saves lives from the nation’s No. 1 killer.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:

Watch your weight.

Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.

Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.

If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

Get active and eat healthy.
