What Does It Take To Create a Life You Love?

By Bailey Frumen, MSW, LCSW ~
I remember going through the motions of my life—wake up, work, eat, sleep. I felt like life was on auto-pilot and I was just doing the things that I thought I “should” be doing.
At that time, I never stopped to look around and ask myself, “Do I like my life?”
My mindset was such that I made choices and decisions about what my life “should” look like and thereby had to “stick it out.” Have you ever been there?
Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom to make a change, other times it might take a health crisis, a lay-off, or a break-up in order to shift the course of your life. For me, it was finding myself in a place of emotional and physical burn-out that decided things had to change.
There are the times where some changes feel like they happen overnight but the truth is, it’s about planting the seeds of change and creating the conditions for them to grow that will give us those “overnight” results.
What does that look like?
It looks like getting clear about what needs to change.
First, you need to take an inventory on your life—what does life look like now and are you happy with it?
One of my favorite tools to use, the Vision Map, comes from my book, Own Your Power: Your Guide to Feeling Powerful, Fearless + Free. In the Vision Map, we look at the six most impactful areas of your life—career, spirituality, relationships, mental/emotional, physical, and financial—to get a picture of what life looks like now and what changes that we are most craving.
Sometimes the desire for change comes from an inspiration, aspiration, or goal. Other times the impetus to change simply comes from being unhappy with how things are now.
Using the Vision Map, we can paint a picture of what we want life to look like, how we want to feel in our life, and most importantly—why we want what we want (remember—it’s always the WHY that gives our goals the stickiness to make change.)
I have learned that there are 3 essential ingredients to creating a life you love. The first is having support + guidance—someone to lean on, help figure things out, and celebrate with. The second is having the right tools—this was s game changer for me, only when I has the right tools to elevate myself was I able to access my full potential. And finally, accountability—I’ve found that the best of intentions almost always fall short without building in the accountability to change.
It’s in the magic of coaching (well, magic and you doing the work too, haha) that big changes can happen. It’s through the support, guidance, and accountability of coaching that allows us to create the life we want and step fully into accessing the wealth of power that resides within all of us.
