A new mobile app, Thank My Farmer, allows consumers to trace their coffee to the farmer that grew it, reports Food Business News. The app, which debuted at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, is run by Farmer Connect, a traceability platform powered by IBM Blockchain. Several companies, including J.M. Smucker Co., Beyers Koffee, RGC Coffee, and Volcafe Specialty Coffee, have helped to develop the app along with Farmer Connect and IBM.
The first brand to test the app is the 1850 premium brand from Folgers, which is owned by J.M. Smucker Co. Other brands will be added throughout the year.
“The aim is humanizing each coffee drinker’s relationship with their daily cup,” says David Behrends, founder and president of Farmer Connect. “Consumers now can play an active role in sustainability governance by supporting coffee farmers in developing nations. Through the blockchain and this consumer app, we’re creating a virtuous cycle.”
