Meatfree Monday – 5 Local Restaurants to Try

By Tracey Hall ~

Did you know that in 2017, vegan orders increased 19 percent? This analysis was done by GrubHub, the online food ordering website. Meat substitutes were found to be ordered 5 percent more on Mondays than the rest of the week.

GrubHub believes the following of the Meatfree Monday movement has attributed to  plant-based food growth. The movement is a public health initiative from The Monday Campaigns, a nonprofit organization in association with The Lerner Centers for Public Health Promotion at Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse universities.

This health initiative was founded based on research that shows Monday as the day people are most willing to start and stay with a new behavior.

This is exciting news for the plant food industry!

Plant based foods sales experienced 8.1% growth over the past year.

In September, the Plant Based Foods Association and The Good Food Institute  released new data commissioned from Nielsen, showing the total market for the plant-based food sector topped $3.1 billion in sales!

The data showed that plant-based dairy alternatives are a fast -growing category, with 20% growth, topping $700 million in sales over the past year. This category, which excludes milks, includes plant-based cheeses, yogurts, and ice creams. Yogurt also shows significant growth, at 56% increase over last year, according to the data.

The plant-based milk category is up 3.1% over the same period. According to the Nielsen data, cow’s milk sales are down about 5%.

Based on this information, it’s clear that we are beginning to make healthier choices while food shopping and dining out. Where do you go to eat a delicious vegetarian meal at the Jersey Shore?
