Mardi Gras and king cakes go hand in hand – especially in New Orleans where hundreds of thousands of king cakes are enjoyed at parties, offices and in homes every year!
Lightly grease a baking sheet, or line it with parchment and prepare your dough.
1. The bread dough rises
2. Cut into 3 ” snakes”
3. Use three Mardi Gras colors- sugar and food coloring mixed
4. Color each snake (3 per cake) into a colored sugar. Gold, green, purple.
5. Braid snakes
6. Grease inverted soup bowl & bring braided dough around securing with toothpick onto greased cookie sheet.
Allow to rise 2nd time.
**sneak plastic baby in under tucking it into dough.
7. Bake at 350 for about 9 -12 min. or unroll light golden.
Let cool & prepare icing. In 3 disposable cups (will stain Tupperware), fill 1/2 up with powdered sugar. Add few drops of rum flavour & food coloring. (follow instructions for color on box.) Add tsp of water and mix till consistency of Elmers’ glue.
Using small teaspoon, “paint” by numbers! Follow colored sugar areas and ice coinciding colors. As soon as one color done, sprinkle with large decorating sugar sprinkles. Then complete next color and so on.
