Three Great Places To Enjoy The Fall Foliage

Although we hate to say “Goodbye” to our Locals Summer, here are three places to enjoy beautiful fall foliage near the Jersey Shore. Consider visiting Cheesequake State Park,  Belleplain State Forest, and Cape May. These spots offer a mix of vibrant woodlands, preserved historic settings, and stunning coastal views to enjoy the autumn colors.

Located in Matawan, this 1,610-acre park is considered a “transitional zone” where northern and southern ecosystems meet.
  • What you’ll see: The park’s diverse terrain includes deciduous forests, saltwater and freshwater marshes, and a cedar swamp. This unique environment offers a spectacular mix of changing leaves in different hues.
  • Best way to view: Take a hike on one of the park’s multiple trails. The yellow trail around the lake is a popular option in the fall.
Situated in Cape May and Cumberland counties, this large forest is an excellent spot for Southern Jersey fall colors.
  • What you’ll see: With over 20,000 acres of oak, maple, and gum trees, Belleplain offers a broad palette of fall colors. The extensive trail system provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
  • Best way to view: Explore the numerous trails on foot or bike. The scenic drive along Route 347 near the forest also provides a lovely view of the autumn scenery.
While known for its beaches, the historic Victorian town of Cape May offers a distinctive fall foliage experience.
  • What you’ll see: The tree-lined streets of the historic district turn brilliant shades of gold and amber, creating postcard-worthy views. Nearby, at
Cape May Point State Park, you can enjoy crimson and auburn leaves with a lighthouse and ocean backdrop.
  • Best way to view: Enjoy a walking tour of the town’s historic streets. For natural beauty, visit
Cape May Point State Park, where you can climb the lighthouse for a panoramic view or hike the scenic trails.
