The American Kennel Club (AKC) announced that they are adding a new dog breed to their family. Not to be confused with the Greyhound or the Whippet, the Azawakh is a tall, slender Hound dog breed that has its roots in West Africa.

In the AKC announcement, they report that the Azawakh dog breed is quite new to the United States, with the first of the breed arriving in the mid-1980s, and the first American litter being born in 1987. The breed grew in popularity, which resulted in them being introduced into the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class in 2011.

The AKC describes the Azawakh as “lean, nimble, athletic and renowned for its guarding instinct,” and says that they have a “gentle, affectionate and playful demeanor.” It will compete in the Hound Group with dog breeds like the Basenji, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Bloodhound.

The AKC says that this breed is predominantly kept as a companion and family pet in the US; however, it makes a great sport dog as well. The AKC explains, “In addition to joining its Hound mates in conformation in 2019, it is a good candidate for barn hunt, lure coursing, agility, rally and trick competitions.”
