Mardi Gras and king cakes go hand in hand, especially in New Orleans where hundreds of thousands of king cakes are enjoyed every year!
Check out this recipe:
Lightly grease a baking sheet, or line it with parchment and prepare your dough.
1. The bread dough rises
2. Cut into 3 ” snakes”
3. Use three Mardi Gras colors- sugar and food coloring mixed
4. Color each snake (3 per cake) into colored sugar, gold, green, and purple.
5. Braid snakes
6. Grease the inverted soup bowl and bring braided dough around securing it with a toothpick onto greased cookie sheet.
Allow it to rise a 2nd time.
**sneak plastic baby in under tucking it into the dough.
7. Bake at 350 for about 9 -12 min. or unroll until lightly golden.
Let cool and prepare the icing. In 3 disposable cups (this will stain Tupperware,) fill 1/2 up with powdered sugar. Add a few drops of rum flavor and food coloring (follow the instructions for color on the box.) Add tsp of water and mix till the consistency of Elmers’ glue.
Using small tsp., “paint” by numbers! Follow colored sugar areas and ice coinciding colors. As soon as one color is done, sprinkle with large decorating sugar sprinkles. Then complete the next color and so on.
