“Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

As children we begin to form our core beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. These beliefs are at the heart of everything we think and do. The primo of these beliefs are how we view ourselves, because as we see ourselves, we will project that image into the world, and the world sends back to us similar vibrations. I would love to know what my daughter was thinking in this picture, and what beliefs she was holding in her sweet mind on this day at the beach.
Also during childhood, we are very self-centered and believe the vibe of the family, friends and mentors falls on our shoulders. So, if there is a chaotic childhood, we believe it is our fault and our responsibility to fix it. The child from this situation may hold beliefs such as “Everything is my fault”. “It is my responsibility to make others happy”. “I am not enough, since my family is not happy and I can’t make it change”
Likewise, if you were brought up in an environment where your opinions were not valued and silenced, you may form beliefs that you are not worthy, not good enough, maybe even believe you are not smart or worse yet stupid (sad, but yes, the thoughts can become so harsh and self-defeating in our heads).
However, if you lived in a loving, secure environment where you were heard and valued and the role models around you were living in healthy relationships, you may have beliefs that are very positive. Unfortunately, this is not the norm because no one is perfect 100% of the time. And as a child, we did not have a grasp that there are ups and downs in life, we just wanted harmony and if there was not, it was up to us to look internally to fix it or create self-defeating beliefs to take the blame.
And then we grew up. We learned the world is not so perfect and as adults were able to consciously accept that. However, we still are lugging around our beliefs from childhood, unknowingly. And these early beliefs are running the show in your subconscious mind. Just like the quote above from Gandhi, you are literally being led by your earliest beliefs and like a domino effect, those beliefs are the catalyst for everything in your life.
Here are some of the beliefs that can be circling around in your head right now:
- I am not good enough
- I am broken
- I am at fault
- I am sick
- I am not strong enough
The list goes on and on. The good news is that you can change these beliefs. The first step is recognizing you have them. The second step is letting go of blame, anger, sadness and any other blocking emotion and accepting the past and wanting to move forward. The third step is replacing the outdated childhood beliefs with new ones that reflect the true self with compassion and understanding.
A few new beliefs could be this:
- I am powerful
- I am enough
- I am healthy and shine from light and love
- I am beauty in action
- I am love
As you begin to change your beliefs, an internal shift takes place emotionally, physically and spiritually, and you align yourself with the truth. This shift not only benefits your internal world, but you will begin to notice the world gives back to you the light that you are now emitting. It is a beautiful process to witness the light of understanding within. You are nothing short of amazing and full of love. All else are stories made up in your head from long ago or agreements you made with others, believing their short-sided opinions. It is time to put down the sword and stop fighting yourself in an imaginary battle. Forgive yourself, forgive others and move into all you were meant to be.
“I AM” are the two most powerful words you can ever speak. Choose carefully how you wish to identify yourself. It is literally a life changer.
