This recipe is great for fall get togethers and parties and a great fondue type treat. Guests spear their own apple chunks, dip into batter and fry in a hot fondue pot with oil or a Fry Daddy.
When I was a young girl, my father would make these for the whole neighborhood on a cold winter afternoon while mom made tons of hot cocoa. The entire neighborhood would come back from the lake and enjoy these after ice-skating.
apples (softer varieties are best-granny smith, golden delicious) peeled , cored and cut into chunks
1-2 C flour
milk-enough to make a pancake batter like consistency
sugar or Sweet ‘n Low-2 tbls or 1-2 packs(to taste)
*optional-nutmeg and or cinnamon
oil for frying
powdered sugar (10X)
Whisk all ingredients together until completely blended and smooth. Heat oil in deep pan or use Fry Daddy. Using tongs, dip apple chunks into batter-coat – allow excess to drip off and gently lower into oil. Be careful not to drop and splash hot oil! When coated pieces are floating and golden brown, remove with slotted spoon and place onto paper towels or newspaper to drain. Have powdered sugar in a shaker and shake a good amount over all the pieces. Yum!! This is always a fun group activity that brings friends and family together. Smiles abound with this one!!
