Home For The Holidays?

By Stephanie Liskowitz, Keller Williams ~

Well, not for everyone, unfortunately. I was reminded of that when Ashley and I visited a Toms River homeless shelter called Just Believe. We couldn’t believe how many people in our area don’t have a home.

Paul Hulse, the director of Just Believe has taken what started out as warming centers at two community churches in Toms River and grew a Code Blue Homeless Shelter in a building provided by the township of Toms River.

The need to provide warmth in freezing temperatures was just the beginning. Feeding the hungry and providing warm clothing was the beginning of services offered to the homeless.

Now, Just Believe has the ability to assist people who need rehab or drug and alcohol detox. They can help find temporary and permanent housing. They are able to help create a resume and prep people for job interviews along with dressing them appropriately for that interview.

These good works have not gone unnoticed. The State of NJ has begun incorporating platforms based on what Just Believe does. Other states have taken notice too. One of their greatest achievements was to bring the Code Blue trigger temperature to 35 degrees in Toms River, not 32 degrees. NJ has also changed to 32 degrees regardless of any precipitation that used to be in the Code Blue parameter.

When Ashley and I were there that night, they had taken in 25 people. Paul talks about seeing the needs and finding solutions. As he puts it, they are “ restoring hope in humanity.”
