When you live here at the Jersey Shore, you just LOVE the summer, that’s a given. So while we’re now enjoying the last of our “locals summer,” I do have to admit that I’m starting to like the fall too. The rich colors and cool air entice us to be outside and start preparing our homes for winter weather and all the upcoming holidays.
There is something about decorating your home in the traditional way with beautiful planters filled with mums, colorful lanterns, and pumpkins that’s so inviting. You can go subtle, you can create a theme, you can change up cushions and pillows, there are so many options. When I think of fall, I think “cozy and warm.”
Recently, I’ve seen some homeowners using a black and white color scheme, especially with chunky fabrics in throws and pillows. Coupled with white blooms and white pumpkins, the results are beautifully dramatic.
Darker colors like reds, deep yellows and orange come to mind this time of year, but I also like to see the use of rich blues and purples in outdoor design.
You can plant pansies, flowering kales, asters and of course mums to create a deep fall palette.
I’ve read that “brown is the new grey” and I’m seeing more use of earth tones both on the interior and exterior of homes. Brass and gold accents are very popular and will be for a while.
I’m excited to see how the homes in our local community will “dress up” for fall! Look for my next column before Halloween- I am “conjuring” up a home decorating contest to celebrate the shores’ spooky side!
