Sunday seems to be a good day of the week to talk about Mindfulness and how we react to what’s going on around us. Don Miguel Ruiz wrote a simple book titled “ The Four Agreements”.
He describes what those agreements are and how by being aware and making these agreements to yourself, you can help ease the stress in your life.
The Four Agreements are:
Be impeccable with your word.
Don’t take anything personally.
Don’t make assumptions.
Always do your best.
Today I am mindful of the agreement that tells us not to take anything personally. What people say is a reflection on themselves and where they are in that moment. It isn’t about us and we shouldn’t make it about us. When we allow that to happen, it means we are agreeing with what they say however, their views don’t describe us accurately at all.
This agreement is very powerful in dealing with a difficult person or situation. When we begin to understand and not take things personally, we can disengage from the hurt or pain that is inflicted when we take the hurtful things to heart.
