While you may not be stopping at your favorite coffeehouse on the way to work or school drop-off, a new way to enjoy coffee has grown in popularity, allowing you to get more out of your cup of joe from home.

The popular trend, known as “proffee,” got its name from a protein and coffee combination that adds nutritional benefits to coffee drinks. By adding a protein-rich option like Premier Protein 30g High Protein Shakes to your coffee, latte or cappuccino – hot or iced – your cup can provide you with up to 30 grams of protein and 24 vitamins and minerals, including antioxidants vitamins C and E that help support a healthy immune system.

Available in nine indulgent flavors – including fan favorites like Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel, Cinnamon Roll and Cookies and Cream – these shakes make it easy to stay on track with your health goals and allow for “proffee” personalization. Plus, they can be enjoyed straight from the container as part of a nutritious breakfast, afternoon snack, post-workout boost or as an ingredient in a protein-packed recipe.

For those looking to make their own proffee, a Chocolate Latte is as simple as it is nutritious. Basic in the best way, you can enjoy the benefits of coffee, but with protein, vitamins and the addition of delicious chocolate notes. Or, for another warm coffeehouse-style option, you can take advantage of the many health benefits of curcumin and turmeric in a Golden Turmeric Vanilla Protein Latte. A sprinkle of pepper may sound odd in your latte, but the pepper can actually improve your body’s absorption of the turmeric.

New App Offers Coffee Traceability https://jerseyshorescene.com/new-app-offers-coffee-traceability/ Tue, 21 Jan 2020 21:00:09 +0000 https://jerseyshorescene.com/?p=5833 A new mobile app, Thank My Farmer, allows consumers to trace their coffee to the farmer that grew it, reports Food Business News. The app, which debuted at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, is run by Farmer Connect, a traceability platform powered by IBM Blockchain. Several companies, including J.M. Smucker Co., Beyers Koffee, RGC Coffee, and Volcafe Specialty Coffee, have helped to develop the app along with Farmer Connect and IBM.

The first brand to test the app is the 1850 premium brand from Folgers, which is owned by J.M. Smucker Co. Other brands will be added throughout the year.

“The aim is humanizing each coffee drinker’s relationship with their daily cup,” says David Behrends, founder and president of Farmer Connect. “Consumers now can play an active role in sustainability governance by supporting coffee farmers in developing nations. Through the blockchain and this consumer app, we’re creating a virtuous cycle.”

Coffee: The Hotter the Better https://jerseyshorescene.com/coffee-the-hotter-the-better/ Mon, 09 Sep 2019 14:00:44 +0000 https://jerseyshorescene.com/?p=4822 Cold brew coffee may be a popular brewing method, convenient and touted as less acidic, but recent research from Thomas Jefferson University proves that hot coffee has higher levels of antioxidants. Analysis of the chemical differences between hot and cold brew light roast coffee from Brazil, Colombia, Myanmar, Mexico, and Ethiopia showed similar pH levels, but hot coffee had higher concentrations of de-protonated acids, which could be the reason why it has more antioxidants than cold brew.

New product launches continue to drive growth, with the market valued at $29 million in 2018 and expected to reach $170 million by the end of 2025, but it may not be coffee lovers’ silver bullet for gastrointestinal distress and good health.

Composting With Coffee Grounds https://jerseyshorescene.com/composting-with-coffee-grounds/ Mon, 22 Jul 2019 20:00:15 +0000 https://jerseyshorescene.com/?p=4593 Coffee Grounds as Fertilizer

Used coffee grounds for gardening does not end with compost. Many people choose to place coffee grounds straight onto the soil and use it as a fertilizer. The thing to keep in mind is while coffee grounds add nitrogen to your compost, they will not immediately add nitrogen to your soil. The benefit of using coffee grounds as a fertilizer is that it adds organic material to the soil, which improves drainage, water retention and aeration in the soil. The used coffee grounds will also help microorganisms beneficial to plant growth thrive as well as attract earthworms. Many people feel that coffee grounds lower the pH (or raise the acid level) of soil, which is good for acid-loving plants. But this is only true for unwashed coffee grounds. Fresh coffee grounds are acidic. Used coffee grounds are neutral. If you rinse your used coffee grounds, they will have a near-neutral pH of 6.5 and will not affect the acid levels of the soil. To use coffee grounds as fertilizer, work the coffee grounds into the soil around your plants. Leftover diluted coffee works well like this too.

Other Uses for Used Coffee Grounds in Gardens

Coffee grounds can also be used in your garden for other things. Many gardeners like to use used coffee grounds as a mulch for their plants. Other used for coffee grounds include using it to keep slugs and snails away from plants. The theory is that the caffeine in the coffee grounds negatively affects these pests and so they avoid soil where the coffee grounds are found. Some people also claim that coffee grounds on the soil is a cat repellent and will keep cats from using your flower and veggie beds as a litter box. You can also use coffee grounds as worm food if you do vermicomposting with a worm bin. Worms are very fond of coffee grounds.

Composting Coffee Grounds https://jerseyshorescene.com/composting-coffee-grounds/ Mon, 06 May 2019 14:00:24 +0000 https://jerseyshorescene.com/?p=4205 Composting with coffee is a great way to make use of something that would otherwise end up taking up space in a landfill. Composting coffee grounds helps to add nitrogen to your compost pile. It’s as easy as throwing the used coffee grounds onto your compost pile. Used coffee filters can be composted as well.

Whether you make your cup of coffee daily or you have noticed your local coffee-house has started to put out bags of used coffee, you may be wondering about composting with coffee grounds. Are coffee grounds as fertilizer a good idea? And how do coffee grounds used for gardens help or hurt?

Oat Milk May Surpass Almond Milk in Coffee Shops https://jerseyshorescene.com/oat-milk-may-surpass-almond-milk-in-coffee-shops/ Mon, 01 Oct 2018 20:05:44 +0000 https://jerseyshorescene.com/?p=3011 Americans are consuming more than 67 million lattes per year, replacing iced coffee with cold brew and switching from almond to oat milk, according to a Coffee Data Report released by Square and the Specialty Coffee Association.

The report found that oat milk sales have increased 425 percent since June 2017, and may soon surpass almond milk, which remains the most popular alternative milk at coffee shops across the U.S. Also, a standard latte isn’t as appealing anymore, as the average American requests two add-ons to their customized coffee order.

Meanwhile, the Australian coffee classic Flat White, a new addition to the U.S. coffee scene, is gaining popularity, with sales increasing 41 percent in the past year.

Ready-to-Drink Coffee Revs Up Growth

Innovation in the ready-to-drink cold coffee segment has contributed to 31 percent growth since 2016, according to Mintel. Consumers want ready-to-drink coffee to offer functional benefits, with 47 percent looking for antioxidants, 40 percent brain health benefits, 35 percent anti-inflammatory benefits, and 30 percent added probiotics. In addition, 42 percent of consumers say their ideal bottled or canned cold coffee drink would help them relax, while 35 percent are interested in products with added protein.
