AAA says air travel is up nearly 8% from last year, with at least 4.5 million people flying to Thanksgiving destinations this year. That’s an increase of more than 330,000 travelers and up nearly 99% from 2019 – before the pandemic.

“It seems counterintuitive given inflation and higher gas prices. But given how separated and isolated we were during the first 2 years of the pandemic — and with travel restrictions now lifted — travel demand is high,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz told CNN via email.

“Thanksgiving kicks off the start of a busy holiday season, and more thankful Americans will travel to spend time with friends and family this year,” said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president, Travel and Publishing. “A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season.”

Triple A confirms:

• Road trip ready: This year, nearly 49 million people are expected to travel by car. That’s 2.5% below 2019 levels, but up by 0.4% from last year. AAA’s forecast looks at trips that are 50 miles or more from home.
• Fuller skies: Air travel is up by 8%The number of Americans expected to travel by air is up nearly 8% over 2021. The five-day period of the 4.5 million Americans flying over the holiday from Wednesday, November 23, to Sunday, November 27, is nearly 99% of the 2019 volume.
• Alternate travel: Travel by other modes of transportation is approaching pre-pandemic levels, too. More than 1.4 million travelers are expected to travel by bus, train or cruise ship during the Thanksgiving holiday — 96% of the 2019 volume.

How do you deal with the long ride? I have family that travels very late at night to avoid traffic, while others use public transportation and leave the car at home. It may be a difficult journey, but the destination is well worth it. To be together with family is the reason for the season. Travel Safe!

Start slow. Pick a color scheme and stick to it throughout your design. First image plays it somewhat safe with blues and whites done it two different patterns (one on chair, one on curtains) then stripe pattern on pillow. This compliments the white walls and natural woods on furniture accents. Then a subtle pattern is added in the rug that does not compete with fabric choices. Easy Peezy, right?

Another design misconception is that you can’t mix different styles. Why? If you like the bohemian rug, the modern coffee table, and traditional sconces, then go for it. I say, trust your gut. Your instincts are probably right and you are the one who is living in the space, so make sure it makes you happy and feel comfortable. We often have customers come in and say they don’t know what they like, but that’s not true. You are drawn to what is appealing to you, even if you purchase an entire floor design. You may not have put it all together, but you loved it enough to buy it or attempt to recreate it.

The last image may just be my favorite. Look at how all those fun patterns blend another!!! Aside from that pink, the colors are subtle. Even though there are four bold patterns in one space, it works. I love blending of textures from the linen throw and pillow, to the weave of basket!
The last thing to consider is the scale of the you are mixing. I find a good rule of thumb is to follow three simple steps to get started when mixing patterns and colors in a space. First, chose your main pattern; something you love that sets the tone of the room. For example, chose a floral if you want the room to feel romantic or whimsical, maybe a stripe for a more beachy feel. Make sure this main fabric or pattern has the color(s) you want to focus on in the space. The second pattern is where you go bold! Use this on pillow, curtain, throws picture frames, etc. Try a bold geometric print to get your feet wet. The last step would be to pick your third pattern that is just for fun but somehow compliments the main fabric. For example, if you chose a floral as your main print and it has a lot of pinks in it, find a stripe pattern with that same print and add it in remaining accessories! Before you know it you will feel like a master designer who has the confidence to tackle any space big or small!

Next, I catch a glimpse of my dining buffet which currently holds my favorite pattern on the pitcher (Giulietta pattern from Arte Italica) and should be considered more of an investment piece. The salt and pepper shakers are vintage Cartier, thanks to my grandmother, and could quite possibly be the cutest things ever. All other pieces were super inexpensive finds from the shop and compliment each other with no rhyme or reason.

Lastly I feature our beat up leather sectional, and if you look hard enough you may even notice my pup asleep. I’ve learned that with two boys, a German Shepherd and my husband as my co habitants that it’s best to keep my living areas simple and clean. But I can’t resist throwing in some serious style when I can! That rug is perfection. Great pattern that is visually pleasing, but so easy to vacuum and clean, also at a price point that won’t break the bank. That gorgeous large bowl is a rustic, hand painted Mexican treasure thanks to my mama and will never leave my possession (haha) because it’s my favorite!
So the next time you feel like throwing everything out in your house and spending all your money on new pieces, maybe think twice… then swap out half and spend half. Or spend the day moving things from one room to another. I often find this technique satisfies my redecorating desires! Also, definitely invest on quality pieces to accommodate inexpensive trendy treasures. And, lastly, look to the ladies before you. Chances are the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and you will love something that’s been tucked away just waiting for you to find.

I run a boutique, a family, a taxi service, maid service, diner… you know, I’m just your typical working mom. I learned a few years ago that a great pair of jeans is really all I need to get me through any day, any season, and nearly any event in my current stage of life. I start with my go to favorite jeans, a pair of booties and a great long cardigan that will get me through my workday, basketball games and driving my kids around. If I have a date night or girls night, I just swap my booties out for some leopard pumps and a blouse and I’m good to go. If it’s summer I’ll start with a soft white tee and gold flats, do my same routine and if I need to switch from mom to wife mode, I’ll throw on a turquoise necklace and some great bangles! Why should it be any different when choosing pieces for your home?

Sofas, sectionals, occasional chairs and cocktail tables can come in all different styles and textures and blues are the perfect neutral. If you want a casual space, you could pick a medium Navy in a cotton fabric with large comfy seats and backs. Add some light gray or soft brown pillows and a casual space is perfected. Ready for Spring and Summer? Add pinks, greens, yellows and oranges in accents to brighten up a room for spring and summer. Already have pieces you love and don’t want to part with but want to up the sophistication or the room? Add a navy leather cocktail table and your are set.
When thinking about a neutral, don’t assume you have to stay in the whites, taupes or beiges, but go back to your favorite denims. It may be easier to invest or accessorize your home when you realize what you are comfortable wearing everyday and what makes your feel the best about yourself. If you feel the best in you favorite pair of jeans, consider wrapping yourself up in a sofa that make you feel the same way.

Not the type to only love wear jeans? Not to worry! Add navy to an accent wall, add a pair of navy lamps to a console or a buffet, or even a navy bowl on your existing cocktail or dining table and you will feel refreshed. Pair navy with gold for a more contemporary or formal space; pair it with silver for a more casual feel. This classic color will never go out of style, so give it a try and learn to love the blues all year round.

Aren’t you getting tired of the cold drab winter? Cabin fever setting in? Yearning for Spring begins to kick in right about now, so why not bring in a little color with indoor gardening? Dish gardens are fun for all ages and a great indoor family activity. Small mini-plants are fun when grouping together for a table or centerpiece. Forcing bulbs is another fun, fast and easy project. Bulbs are interesting as some grow so incredibly fast offering color and fragrance.

    When I was growing up, my dad would give an Amaryllis bulb to each of us at Christmas. These usually are found in boxes already set in a little pot of peat moss. We would attach a yardstick to the pot to check on the daily growth. What a surprise to come home from school to find 2 more inches had shot up! I was always convinced I would be able to see it move IF I could stay home! The height was amazing and the huge trumpet-shaped blossoms that opened lasted for days! The colors are vivid red, white, pink, variegated red & white. These are easily found in many hardware stores and garden centers. (if you can find one open in Winter) Found in abundance at Christmas, January starts to wind down till Spring inventory bounces back.

     Paperwhites AKA Narcissus are beautiful little indoor fun flowers too. These are sold loose by the bulb or about 7 to a bag and one of the easiest to grow and maintain. I’ve always tried to give as gifts as a fun pick me up for friends. Online purchases can vary when ordering in bulk. I’ve searched locally from Neptune to Sea Girt and found some still available at Barlow’s, Sea Girt.

    When planting in a shallow dish use pebbles, beach glass or glass “pebbles”. Set the bulbs in the shallow dish (always use an odd number for floral arrangements) top, point up and nestle the pebbles or glass around the bulbs to secure. Leave about 1/3 of the top exposed. Add water to just the bottom of the bulbs always maintaining the level. Place near a window to enjoy. As leaves and stalks pop up, roughly 7-10 days, turn the dish every couple of days to keep the stalks straight as they reach toward the sunlight light. Often you may need to stake to prevent a stem from bending or breaking. I’ve also seen Paper Whites grown in a tall clear glass vase which helps keep them upright. The fragrance of the star-shaped flowers will fill the room with happy warm Spring thoughts. As they bloom, you may extend the life by moving from direct sunlight to a cooler part of the house.

    Creating a terrarium or mini-dish garden has become once again popular with a new twist. Fairy gardens are the big rage with dozens of cool miniature items from furniture, mini birdbaths, pavers, fairy’s, trolls and a wide variety of accessories. To create a realistic mini landscape check out your options of trees. Mini trees include: English Boxwood, False Cyprus, Parlor Palm, Norfolk Pine and Ellwood’s Blue Cyprus. Adding indoor bedding plants complete the woodsy look of a real garden. An example would be a mix of English Boxwood, Dwarf Mondo Grass and baby tears all of which will do just fine in bright or indirect light with regular watering.

     Try to copy the natural look of an outdoor setting. The sky’s the limit and when looking for good creative entertainment for the family, what a great way to get the kids involved in picking out their mini plants and arranging. Be sure to check out all the fairy supplies at your local craft store too.

    This activity is excellent for shut-ins and the elderly. Many of our seniors are no longer able to get down and dirty in their gardens and dearly miss the fun. Perking up their day and interests with a project that they can enjoy all year-long will pique interest and get them using hands that otherwise may sit idle.
